Center Street's two-block commercial strip packs taco joints, dive bars, and surf shops into a space smaller than most hotel lobbies, and the vibe is deliberately un-polished. If downtown Charleston is a candlelit dinner, Folly is a bonfire on the sand.

The island's geography is simple: the pier marks the center, the Washout surf spot anchors the east end, and the western tip trails off into the tidal flats facing Morris Island Lighthouse. A bike covers the whole thing in twenty minutes.

Eating, drinking, and doing

Bowens Island Restaurant technically sits on the road to Folly rather than the island itself, but no Folly trip is complete without its roasted oysters shoveled onto newspaper over the marsh. On-island, Jack of Cups Saloon serves curried comfort food with an island-hippie soul, and Taco Boy fuels post-surf appetites with Baja tacos and frozen margaritas. The Folly Beach Pier stretches a thousand feet over the Atlantic — walk it at sunrise for pelicans and solitude.

For the adventurous: the walk to Morris Island Lighthouse at low tide is a two-mile beach hike to a leaning 19th-century lighthouse slowly being reclaimed by the sea. Bring water and check the tide chart.
