The peninsula, block by block

Downtown Charleston packs three centuries of architecture into a peninsula you can walk end to end in forty minutes. South of Broad Street, mansion-lined blocks run to The Battery's harbor promenade. The French Quarter concentrates the postcard Charleston: cobblestoned Chalmers Street, art galleries behind wavy-glass windows, and church bells marking the hours. Push north of Calhoun and the energy shifts — Cannonborough-Elliottborough is the neighborhood where young Charleston actually lives, brunches, and opens its newest restaurants.

That geography is worth studying before you book, because "downtown" stays vary enormously. A South of Broad address means gas lanterns and silence by 9 p.m.; an upper King Street address means rooftop bars and a 2 a.m. soundtrack. Neither is wrong — they are simply different trips.

Eating and drinking on the peninsula

Begin with the icons: Husk in its Queen Street mansion, FIG for the plate that converts skeptics, and 167 Raw for the lobster roll that justifies its line. The bar scene deserves equal planning. The Gin Joint mixes the peninsula's most serious cocktails behind an unmarked Broad Street door, while The Rooftop at The Vendue pours sunset views over the French Quarter's church spires.

Morning people are equally well served. Callie's Hot Little Biscuit hands warm buttermilk biscuits through a takeout window on upper King; Kudu pours the courtyard espresso locals cross town for.

Beyond the postcard

The must-sees earn their reputations — Rainbow Row's pastel Georgians, the City Market's sweetgrass weavers, the carriage tours clopping down Meeting Street. But downtown's deeper rewards hide a block or two off the route: the camellia-shaded churchyard of St. Philip's, the wrought-iron gates of Philip Simmons scattered across the East Side like signatures, second-story piazzas glimpsed through garden gates.

For history with spine, the Old Slave Mart Museum on Chalmers Street tells the story the mansions don't, in the very building where enslaved people were sold. It is the most important hour you will spend downtown.
